History is Educational. Not Prescriptive!

My first client as a consultant was an electricity cooperative in a sleepy “little” town in North Texas - the kind of place where people stay a long time and eat at the same taco place every Tuesday (Rosa's... YUM!). The project was a great first gig right out of school -  nice people at the client, awesome project team AND an approachable, mentoring project leadership team (I now know that combination is quite elusive). I learned more in the first six months than in all of B-school - about being a consultant, setting expectations, leadership, taking initiative and, sadly, the show Lost (why did everyone love that show so much?! Magic, time travel, the hatch? I still don’t get it.).

There were multiple projects in flight at the client when I joined the team. I was put on a project that was, at it’s core, about technology. We were replacing their paper-based ticketing system for the client’s technicians in the field. For example, when a meter was not reading correctly or it was tampered with, it needed to be replaced by someone with more expertise than a meter reader. Tickets for these types of incidents were generated at the corporate office (which all the engineers drove to from all over North Texas every morning), distributed to the techs and then worked by the appropriate tech back in the field, largely based on geography. The techs would work their tickets, complete them, and then drive back to corporate HQ to turn in their tickets (hopefully, you are starting to see the inefficiencies!). What I quickly realized is that we weren’t doing a technology project - we were helping the client transform their thinking.

The interesting part was not with the technicians (they were generally reluctant to adopt new technology, but were curious enough about the tablets that they were engaged), but with the supporting departments. Most notably was the Billing department - their process was painfully manual - typing in comments and readings on multiple screens. When I was documenting the process I asked why it was entered and re-entered (the same information on multiple screens) and I got the infamous line, “We’ve always done it this way…"

Author’s Note: In my consulting career I have led numerous transformation efforts. One thing I have learned to listen for - especially when digging to figure out where the real issues are - is the phrase, “We’ve always done it this way…” Now, this can have various meanings, but generally its, “No one really knows why we do it this way, but we do and we always have and there is no way we could ever, ever do it differently. EVER!"

After completing the current state document, we moved on to designing the future state (to support the new tablets and their integration with the billing system). Obviously, one of the opportunities for improvement was the processes within Billing. I met one-on-one with the Director of Billing and she wasn’t excited about me “messing up” her department. As we continued the conversation - I was explaining the benefits of the changes: no longer entering things on multiple screens, auto filling in comments from the tablets, pushing meter readings automatically... It was basically utopia! Her response, well, not so much:

“I have children older than you! What do you know about running a billing department!?”

After I pulled my chin up off the desk (I was early in my career and hadn’t developed a great “ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME!!” poker face), I simply asked her to explain to me why this wasn’t good for her and her department. “Well,” she replied, “that’s just not how we do things here!"

Wow. Just… Wow.

Four Simple Steps to Learn from the Past, Not Repeat it.

1. Don’t Be Afraid to Fail.

The number one driver of the status quo is comfort. Period. People don’t even look for ways to improve (RE: Change) because they’ve “always done it this way”… The comfort that one draws from knowing how things are done creates an impenetrable armor of FEAR. Fear of the unknown. Fear of failure. If you want to stop repeating the past - you have to confront the possibility of failure.

Teach yourself to be comfortable with ambiguity and the unknown. PRACTICE! Start with small things with low risk (letting your significant other choose where to eat, cook a new recipe, wear a new shirt color!) to learn to cope with your discomfort. The reality is, failure is simply a step forward towards success. Don’t fear it. Embrace it.

2. Ask “Why” - Early & Often

Yes, we get incredibly frustrated when two and three year olds ask “why” about EVERYTHING. Their innate sense of curiosity is insane! However, the thirst for knowledge and understanding is something we should re-learn. Sinek challenges us to Start With Why and Sakichi Toyoda implored us to ask why FIVE TIMES! Yet, we are so comfortable with nodding our heads and just doing it the way it's always been done.

If you are intentional about discussing why with your people, you teach them that it’s better to understand and learn from the past rather than repeat it.

3. Never Stop Learning!

Einstein was famous for saying, “Once you stop learning, you start dying.” Frankly, I couldn’t agree more. Each day you have experiences. From positive to negative, the outcomes impact you in a certain way. YOU CAN LEARN FROM THESE EXPERIENCES! No matter how much control you think you have in a situation, you absolutely have complete control over your reaction and what you can learn. Decide today - this moment - that you are going to stop looking at an experience as a reason to bitch and moan at the world and you are going to start looking at them as an opportunity to learn.

4. Surround Yourself with People that Think Differently.

We like to be around people that are like us - think the same, were raised the same and love the New England Patriots (FREE TOM BRADY!). However, if you want to achieve high performance and do things that have NEVER been done in your organization (or on your team) - you must surround yourself with smart people that see the world differently. Someone a lot smarter than me once (I’m clearly on an Einstein kick) said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” Step outside your comfort zone and bring in people that will challenge you by thinking differently (and ask hard questions!).

Learning from Crisis - Lessons from the Boston Marathon

I've been a very fortunate Bostonian.

Besides the obvious fortune of being able to live in the greatest city in world - the past four years have been sports nirvana.  I've seen the Bruins in the Stanley Cup, the Revs reach the MLS Cup, the Sox win the World Series and the Pats lift the Lombardi Trophy! It has basically been sports greatness non-stop (let's ignore the three last place finishes by the Sox!).  The most memorable sporting moments for me, however, have all been during the Boston Marathon - a race I've had the opportunity to run the past three years. 

The Marathon in 2013 was one of the most impactful events in my life. 

There will be some that read this that are crazy enough to have run a marathon (I've run four and have plans to run another in November... Yeah, I'm REALLY crazy), but for those of you that have only shaken your head at us weekend running warriors, let me give you some insight into what it's like... Torture, ice baths, blisters, snow, aches, pains and more ice baths.

Despite the absolute grind, the feeling of crossing that finish line is unlike any other feeling. The feeling of adrenaline rushing through you - elation, pride - battling back the physical and emotional exhaustion, the pain. It’s something we call the “Runner’s High” - but you don’t get it, and that’s ok. We don’t do it for you, we do it for ourselves…

Most of the country doesn’t understand that the Boston Marathon truly is the “Super Bowl” of running. There isn’t anything else like it - the history, the course, the weather, the city… They grossly limit the field by requiring ridiculously fast qualifying times (that sounded like a #humblebrag, but it wasn't - my ticket was punched by raising money for charity) - this isn’t your local running club’s 10k. And, on April 15, 2013 - everything was just as it should be.

April 15, 2013 was a pristine Patriot’s Day. One of those days you pray for when planning a picnic for a first date - deep blue sky with contrasting fluffy clouds and a crisp spring temperature in the high 50s - warm enough to be pleasant, but cool enough to want to share the blanket. This was my first marathon and I had the nerves of a kid on the first day of Middle School… I knew what to do and how to do it, but I was in a big, new, scary place and just didn’t want to look stupid. Thankfully, my training partner and Boston-Marathon-Partner-for-Life had run in big races and was full of “pro tips” (big shoutout to the man, the myth, the Legend - Eric Winton!). 

Frankly (this is your official #humblebrag warning), I CRUSHED the race!! Wow, ok, you’re right. That was just an obnoxious, blatant brag…and I’m ok with it! I EARNED it! I couldn’t have scripted the day any better. I came out smart, survived the middle and dominated the hills. I actually posted negative splits the last five miles (that’s a really geeky, impressive running lingo - nailed it). 

It was perfect. Until it wasn't. 

We were blocks away from the finish line when the bombs went off… A string of emotions came at full speed - curiosity, confusion, anger, frustration, worry, fear. It couldn’t really be happening, could it? Will I get to finish? Why are they stopping me?! What the…?! Why do we have to turn back? Wait, so I’m not going to finish?! What do you mean it’s not safe? What happened? 

I don’t need to chronicle what happened at 2:49pm EST. You’ve heard about it, read about it, likely, you’ve seen the footage. What you may not know is what efficient brilliance was shown by a group of people that was prepared for aching muscles, blisters and over-exertion - not multiple bombs meant to destroy and maim. 

Lessons from the Boston Marathon: Prepare for the Unknown Tomorrow

  • Acquire the Right Resources
    As a business leader, you are responsible for ensuring your organization has the most effective resources possible for any given scenario. If you’re a new supervisor on the factory floor, it’s making sure you’re people are on-time, alert and have the right safety equipment… If you are responsible for coordinating the most prestigious marathon in the world, you worry about water, gatorade, clocks and of course, great volunteer and medical staffs. Why were there limited casualties from the TWO bombs that were set off at the finish line? The marathon was adequately staffed and had the right resources to react accordingly to anything - even a pair of bombs. If you are going to be a great leader - capable of navigating even the most tumultuous of situations - you must acquire the right resources and prepare them for anything. How? It starts with communicating...
     
  • Communicate, Communicate, Communicate
    For anyone that has been involved with the Boston Marathon in the last decade knows they are incredibly efficient. One impressive manifestation of this is the way they communicate. They have a constant drumbeat of communication throughout the year - from “Congratulations! You’ve been accepted!” to “See you next year!” to the signs papered all over the city leading up to the race. The learning? Their culture of clear communication resonates through everything. Everyone in attendance understands who, what, when, where and how. This isn’t on accident. You cannot be prepared to thrive through crisis if you’re people don’t trust you (if they hear you, but don't trust you - you'll lose). Trust starts with communication.
     
  • Accept That the Only Constant is Change
    Medical professionals are a different breed. They are trained from day one to expect the unexpected and persevere through any and every situation to save people’s lives. They’re incredible. Obviously, this was true of those volunteers at the finish line. They were prepared for anything. They were ready for any scenario - even one that was never supposed to happen. Agility, Flexibility and Change are critical core competencies for an organization that hopes to exist beyond tomorrow. If you hope to be successful next quarter, next year or into the next decade - you better start learning - and teaching - how to thrive through change.
     
  • Execute. Don't Panic. 
    One of my all-time favorite quotes came from a Lee Child novel, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” It doesn’t matter what you do if you can’t execute. I’m not talking about executing in the “best case scenario”; this is the real world. It’s scary, it changes, everything goes wrong and at least one thing breaks. Every. Single. Day. Arguably, this is what the team at the Finish Line did best - they executed. They didn’t panic - they didn’t run away. They did what they were (tangentially) trained to do. In crisis situations, the people follow their leader. YOU’RE ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDEST. 

Prepare yourself. Start today. 

I ran the marathon the next year with 35,755 of my closest friends - the largest field in the history of the race. It was a glorious day (albeit, wicked hot!). It was perfect again…

But I promise you this, everyone was ready to respond. To anything.

5 Steps to Fix Your People's Motivation Problem (Hint: You're the Problem)!

His face was beaten to a pulp. His pasty white skin had the look of an apple ready to be picked - shiny, ripe and almost red... Blood tends to have that effect. His ribs were cracked, his knuckles fractured. He was in an intense pain.

The concrete floor was cold; it rumbled under the shouting of men - too many to count, but too few to get lost. Someone helped him up, he slipped on a cocktail of blood and sweat only to be caught by someone else. He looked across the room and grinned, "Again next week?" He was consumed by the roar of the crowd.

He was happy. He belonged. He was part of something. For the first time in his life, he knew he could do whatever he wanted - BE whatever he wanted. He couldn't wait for what was next. As he put his shirt back on, he made a pathetic attempt to make the blood stop. Then, it happened - his favorite part. The Leader - his Leader - stepped into the middle of the room. 

The raucous gathering was reduced to a church-like silence, leaning in, urging the thick, humid air to loosen it's grip on the moment... The Leader was known for his charisma and his zealot-like passion. As he circled the room, his eyes darted from one person to the next, bringing each one of them in even further, making every person feel as if he was the only one in the room. At long last the Leader, with the command of a general and the attitude of a rebel, spoke - 

"The first rule of Fight Club is... You do not talk about Fight Club."

Have you ever felt that - the feeling of true motivation?!? Feeling like you can do it - whatever the task - and never tire of it?

I'm not talking about the "if I don't do this I'll get fired" or the "I'm just doing this so I can pay the bills" kind of motivation. I'm talking about the "I would run through a brick wall because I want to" kind of motivation. The incredible mixture of purpose, autonomy and empowerment to use your passion and skill within a community working towards something meaningful!

Now, most of you are confused. You don't understand how Tyler Durden was able to motivate a large group of men from disparate backgrounds without paying them a dime? Oh, that's right - you're thinking - this is fiction! Now you're relieved, "Chuck wrote a great book; Brad was great in the movie, but it's completely out of touch - he doesn't understand what it's like to manage people in the real world..."

Yes, I agree that it is an outstanding book and an incredibly entertaining movie, but I disagree with thinking he's out of touch. Quite the contrary. I think he nailed it...

Let's talk about a book you won't ignore. Drive - in my humble opinion - is the best book for understanding the principles of motivation. Author Daniel Pink - yes, NYT & WSJ Best Selling Author Daniel Pink - provides incredible insight into what drives us as humans. SPOILER ALERT - we’re not driven by a damn paycheck. The crazy part, Pink has a method to his findings, it’s called #science.

      Autonomy - “The desire to direct our own lives…” 

  We want to feel like we have control over our lives; like we have some semblance of the direction of our destiny. When you lord over your people - micro-managing them from the moment they get in at 8am (because working from 10am-7pm would be COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!) until they power down their machine "when you say they can leave" - they are not only de-motivated, they aren't expanding their skills and aren't actually engaging brain! It doesn't take a MBA to know that isn't the way to build and develop high-performing teams!

      Mastery - “The urge to get better and better at something that matters…"

  We are extremely motivated by improvement. Why do you quit the gym after two weeks? You don't see results! You can't see the improvement and you don't feel like you're getting better (all you know is that you're sore ALL THE TIME!). Pursuing and achieving Mastery is incredibly motivating as it doesn't happen overnight - Pink eludes to "Mastery is a Pain". "Mastery" takes us 10 years to achieve! That's why that person on your team wants to "just stay a techie geek" - he wants to master it. Let him and he will always work longer and harder than anyone else... Why? Because he wants to.

      Purpose - “The yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves…"

  Simon Sinek helped us all understand the importance of Starting with Why. "People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it!" This is the essence of motivating a macro team. Can you connect to the "greater good" that is relevant to the team? No, "it's good for the company" is not a statement that works and it DEFINITELY isn't the "greater good"! I always get asked about this... "We don't work in non-profit, we're a [insert any company that isn't Tom's Shoes]!" I get it, it's hard, but you can connect your people to a purpose that will motivate. You simply need to take the time to do it (more on that in a moment). 

With all due respect to Mr. Pink, I think there is an additional motivator. One that drives the behavior of individuals from sports teams to teens on the streets. I call it community.

      Community - The longing to belong to a group of people that loves us more than we do ourselves

  Yes, I understand that this links very closely with Pink's Purpose, but I think this is different - and important to call out. We crave community, we are wired that way (for more on this, Google "the psychology of community"). We want to be part of a team/group/gang/gaggle that accepts us, one that we feel like we contribute to and, most importantly, matter! Throughout history, we've formed groups for survival, for healing, for growth and to entertain the masses (thank you, N*SYNC). If you can make your people feel less like a collection of disparate people and more like a community - you will see results you only dreamed of (again, more on this in a moment). 

If you are still stuck in your “I’m gonna carry around my hammer and beat people into doing what I want!” way of thinking, let me be clear - you will never have loyalty OR high performance. Nope. Never. Carrots and Sticks don’t work when it matters! NOTE: Pink goes into great detail on this point in his book. Check it out!

Remember that cheesy poster that hung in your elementary school, Character is what you do when no one's watching! - it was normally in some neon color and had a cartoon on it? That is a great way to think about leadership... Leadership is manifested by what your people do when you aren't watching! Carrots and Sticks will not drive lasting behavior change - or motivation - they will simply "inspire” (that was meant to be DRIPPING with sarcasm, if you didn’t pick it up) action when you're standing over them with the hammer. 

What You Can Start Doing Now - 5 Steps to Tranforming Your De-Motivated Individuals into a Motivated Team

Ok, so you’re convinced. Everything you’ve been doing to motivate is wrong. You’ve eaten your carrots and thrown you stick in the woods. Great! What do you do now? Here is where you start down the path towards driving your team to new heights and high performance: 

1.    Stop Thinking Your People "Just Aren't Motivated"

◦  They aren't motivated because you aren't motivating them! You're right, there are a range of people on your team - some have an incredible amount of intrinsic motivation and some have less than zero. However, you can motivate them! Stop blaming them and start looking at yourself. FLIP your paradigm and think of your people as individuals that are capable of great things - extraordinary things if they work together (hint - your job is to get them there!). This is a very simple first step, but changing your attitude is never easy.

2.    Take Time to Develop Your Team's Purpose Statement

◦  Let's get very tactical for a moment. In order to develop your team's Purpose Statement you need to:

1.       Schedule the time to do it

2.      Shut the door, close Outlook, turn off your phone and FOCUS (more on dealing with distractions in a later blog post!)

3.    Write down (on a piece of paper with a pen - too many distractions on your iPad or PC) - in detail - why your team or organization exists; what the goal is; why the goal is important; what happens if you don't reach your goal; who is counting on you to reach your goal/do your job. As you start this line of thinking, your mind will go in multiple directions - do everything you can to capture these thoughts!

4.    Analyze your "findings" and pull together a core statement of who you are and why you exist. NOTE: this doesn't need to be incredibly eloquent and can absolutely evolve. The important point is that you are showing your team that you care enough to take the time to think about it's purpose!

5.    Once you have a draft Purpose Statement, you should discuss it with your people! And, not coincidentally, that's the next step in the process...

3.      Host 1-on-1 Conversations with Your People

  First of all, if you aren't having regular 1-on-1 Meetings with your people, shame on you. (You should be.) In this particular 60 minute, one-on-one conversation, you should have two goals:

1.      Sharing the Purpose Statement and getting your team member's feedback. Your words and tone matter here... Ensure they understand this is a draft, not a finished product. In order for it to be complete, each team member needs to give input and "sign-off" - however informally. 

2.    Find out what motivates them! This is really complicated. You just, well, ask them, "What motivates you?!" Crazy, I know. You want to know what gets them out of bed in the morning. What is his/her WHY? One word answers are not allowed here. Ask probing questions like, "Tell me more about that" and "When did you realize that was a motivator?". These questions will give you insight into tasks that an individual wants to Master...! Finally, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE SOMEONE IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT MOTIVATES THEM!?

  There are many awesome outcomes from this meeting - you won't even know the full impact until much later. Trust me, this is worth EVERY MOMENT of time you invest in it. 

4.      Provide Relevant, Meaningful Metrics

  Now, you have a statement that is meaningful to everyone on your team and you have an idea of what motivates your people. This, coupled with the corporate objectives of your team, creates measures that actually add value and provide status on how your team is doing. 

◦  This is another great opportunity to sit with your team and discuss what measures actually capture the activities that really matter - and add value. This can be as simple as you want! Here are some sample metrics I've seen teams create in the past (above and beyond the quantitative measures pushed down by management):

1.      Number of "High Five" Moments in a Day

2.      Keep the Number of Meetings Greater than One Hour to 3 in a Week

3.      Actually Host - and Have People Attend - Our Monthly Team Happy Hour

  Managers always get so hung up on metrics - they don't have to sound like they are straight out of an HBR issue. Be creative and, most importantly, get the input of your people!

5.      Stay Out of the Way!

  You read that right. Stop thinking that EVERYTHING must run through you. There is a TON of content about not micro-managing... I won't beat that point up here. If you've followed the steps above, you have a team that has a unified purpose and actually knows what it is, you know what excites and motivates your team, as individuals and as a whole, and you have measures that are relevant and track things that people actually care about! Now, your job is to remove roadblocks and make your people successful (not be the hero that does everything!). 

You don't have to be Tyler Durden to motivate - you just need to stop doing what you're doing.

 

Really?! Quit Living the Stereotype!

A stereotype is a widely held, but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing (thanks, internet!) Why do we stereotype? Why are you such a stereotype? No really, you are. Some of you don't even realize it; most of you are simply in denial.

Before casting that indictment - a quick story...

It was a sunny, beautiful late summer Saturday morning in New York City.  One of those mornings that young people in NYC don't usually see (because it was before 1pm!?). #millennialstereotype

My wife and I were visiting the City and decided to explore with a run. From our hotel on 37th we headed uptown towards Central Park and experienced the city waking up - shops opening, dueling smells of the previous wild night and the coffee that was brewing. We finally finished battling pedestrians and shop owners and arrived in the Park to a whole new world. Strollers, runners, horses, playgrounds... We weren't sure if these were our enemies or our allies - who has that much energy before 10am!? Why is everyone either laughing and smiling or screaming and crying!? #familystereotype

After looping through the park, we were headed back to the hotel when I was stopped. Instantly (I was going to use a hit by a truck metaphor, but it didn't seem right). At the corner of 45th and 8th, next to a bike rental rack, there was a simple advertisement. An ad for - honestly, I still don't know. I was too captivated by the words; I never looked for a logo.

Awesome, right!? 

To be clear, this post isn't about technology - it's about your mindset. What is it about the human condition that implores us to hang on so intently to the past (more on that in future posts! Yes, that was a shameless plug). I've worked with Fortune 100s, Fortune 500s and startups. With CEOs, SVPs, middle managers and doers. With women, men, frat bros and tenured, grouchy, change-hating "old people". #babyboomerstereotype  Yes, they all struggle mightily with thinking they can use what they did yesterday to be successful tomorrow. In previous generations that was possible, sure, but in the VUCA world we live in - not so much. The world (technology) is changing so quickly that we must completely transform the way we examine everything in our attempt to predict the future - or, simply be happy, successful individuals.

Right about now, you're getting annoyed (some personalities are outraged!) that I haven't explained why I think you are such a stereotype - even though you work so hard to "swim upstream" and "think outside the box" and [insert other stupid buzz words and phrases here]. I think you are stereotypically stuck in your ways. You "hate change". Don't blame me, this is science talking... Diffusion of Innovation tells us that only 16% of you are early adopters of ideas, technology and innovation. That means 84% are skeptical and want things to stay how they've always been. In the past. EIGHTY FOUR PERCENT! #science

If you haven't figured it out by now, allow me to be blunt - you can't FLIP your life, your people or your organization by "doing it the way we've always done it" and by looking backward. This isn't one of those "here are three things you can do..." posts - this is a STOP DOING WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND CHANGE YOUR THINKING plea!  

Socrates was trying to sell this in early 400 BC. His quote is in every Change Your Life seminar worldwide. While that drives me crazy and makes me want to never use it, it doesn't take away the brilliance... He said, "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new."

So, stop it. Seriously. Stop being a stereotype. It's cliché and embarrassing. Change your mindset; FLIP your thinking and you can transform your organization.

Battling Irrelevance: What Shinseki Got Right That You Continue to Screw Up

Retired four star U.S. Army general Eric Shinseki is a hero. There isn't any other way to describe him. He is a second generation American (his grandparents emigrated from Hiroshima to Hawaii in 1901), born in Hawaii in 1942. Shinseki was highly educated, attending the US Military Academy and earning a Master of Arts degree from Duke. He held a multitude of postings in his 38 years of military service - their singular connection: success.

Shinseki earned TWO Purple Hearts, THREE Bronze Stars, multiple Distinguished Service Medals (from Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard), and the Army Commendation Medal, among others. Shinseki is the MJ, Pele, Tom (Brady, of course) and Ted (yes, Ted WIlliams) all in one. 

So yeah, we can all agree he's a hero. That's how you would describe him.

That's just part of the story. There's more - the former Army chief of staff lived and personified leadership. Collins would call him a Level 5 Leader. Covey would say that he is a leader that actively lived the 8th Habit. Kotter would call him the ultimate Change Agent. Blanchard would call him The Servant Leader.  Shinseki, though, in his incredible humility and grace, would probably prefer what my niece would call him before giving him a big hug, (in her adorable two year old lisp) "Mr. Shinthekee!" 

So, we're clear. He was humble, heroic and an incredible leader, but what does this have to do with me? With you? Shinseki was transformational and you can learn a lot more from him than you can your required HR Supervisor course. 

Rewind to 1999 when Shinseki became the Army's chief of staff. The Army was generally tired, rigid, immobile and ready to fight wars like they did in Vietnam and during Desert Storm - with a defined enemy in a defined location. Shinseki knew that a transformation was needed. We needed to be nimble, mobile, flexible and ready to strike quickly - something Shinseki referred to as the Stryker Brigade Combat Teams. 

Saying he was met with resistance is like saying you're not looking forward to going to the DMV. #understatement

Since we are talking about the government and change - Shinseki was (predictably) called before Congress to defend his proposal. While being talked down to about his "outrageous" proposal, Shinseki, as cool and calm as ever, leaned forward in his chair and said something that had become his mantra during his time as chief of staff, "If you don't like change, you're going to like irrelevance a lot less."

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

What's your choice? Change or irrelevance? 

As we know now, Shinseki was right. We had to change our Army - the most powerful army in the history of the world - to maintain our relevance in a war that we had never seen with an enemy we had never encountered. Many would claim it was too late and resulted in unnecessary casualties, but that's not what I want to argue. I want to argue - no, implore you - that you need to transform your outlook. 

Why do you hate change so much? Isn't it better than irrelevance?  Yet you toil each and every day to keep things from changing. This isn't about Kodak or Blockbuster; this isn't some case study. This is your life!

You have the opportunity in every moment to go on the offensive, to battle irrelevance. Here's how you FLIP your life, your organization and your spouse (haha - yeah right - I'm not going there!) from didn't reach their potential to smiling when you look in the mirror:

   Fail. This makes all the self-proclaimed perfectionists - or anyone Type A - VERY uncomfortable. To be successful and reach a place that you've never allowed yourself to imagine, you must take chances - and taking chances means failing. Fail often, quickly and forward. Most people are taught that failure is a four letter word, but I would assert that as long as you aren't making the same "mistakes" twice, you are becoming a better you. 

   Listen. My mother is an incredibly wise woman, she has to be, she's a Nona. My mother always told me I had "two ears and one mouth" and that "hearing and listening are two different things..." While I still don't fully know what any of that means, I do know that building real relationships and surrounding yourself with a community of individuals that you will give you real feedback is critical. Stop having a bunch of fake "friends" and find yourself a Joey, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Monica and, most importantly, a Phoebe. Then, listen to what they say! And give them a hug after they say it.

   Improve. Improvement is all about practice. Remember what Gladwell said about deliberate practice for 10,000 hours? Fortunately for you this doesn't fall into that category. However, you can't just think, "Phoebe is right - I need to change" and then everything is magically going to be better. You must be intentional - you have to focus (which is hard since most of you are doing at least two other things as you read this). If you truly desire to change, you must invest your time and attention.   

   Perform. This is it - the payoff. You get to actually do what you've been practicing. Yes, actually doing it is the hard part, but it is, without a doubt, the best part. The reality is, you can't truly FLIP your life if you don't put it into action. You can't FLIP your organization if you don't execute. Now is the time to truly make the change, or, as Robin Williams would say, "Carpe Diem!

Churchill was famous for saying, "To improve is to change. To perfect is to change often." I'm sure Shinseki was a fan of that quote... Here's my question: Are you grinding towards marginal improvement or battling irrelevance everyday towards perfection?
